The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is an organization of 187 countries dedicated to promoting global monetary cooperation and the health and stability of the international financial system. Each member of the IMF contributes through the payment of quotas, ($353 billion in 2009) which reflect that country's size in the world economy and determine its voting power (the US has a 17% voting stake). The IMF supports worldwide economic growth by granting loans and technical assistance to countries in need. The IMF and sister institution the World Bank were formed by 45 countries in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, in 1944 in an attempt to avoid the kinds of problems brought about by the Great Depression of the 1930s.

Just the facts, ma'am -- that's what the US Bureau of Labor Statistics aims to deliver. The agency (also known as BLS) collects, processes, analyzes, and shares labor economics information with Congress, other government entities, the public, and the business sector. It reports statistics regarding inflation, unemployment, labor productivity, workplace safety, and much more. BLS searches for data that reflect current economic conditions, are impartial, and are relevant to current social and economic issues. It also is responsible for several publications including the Occupational Outlook Handbook and Career Guide to Industries. BLS was established in 1884 and is a part of the Department of Labor.

The US Department of Labor labors for laborers. The department looks out for job seekers, workers, and retirees in the US. It works to advance work opportunities, improve work conditions, and protect retirement and health benefits. It helps employers find workers and tracks changes in employment, prices, and other economic measurements. The department also administers federal labor laws that govern safe working conditions, minimum wage and overtime pay, employment discrimination, and unemployment insurance. An act of Congress created the department in 1913. Hilda L. Solis was confirmed as Secretary of Labor in February 2009. The agency has a $53 million annual budget.
