What does an Emergency Room Nurse do?

Emergency room nurses are nursing professionals who provide medical treatment and support in the emergency department of a hospital or healthcare facility. They often play a central role with the initial intake, assessment, and triage process. They provide direct patient care and address immediate medical needs, such as dressing wounds, and also administer medications. They conduct initial assessments, which may include performing routines tests such as an EKG. Their objective is to ensure patients get treatment and relief from pain and other symptoms as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Emergency room nurses are most commonly RNs (registered nurses), although some opportunities may also be available for LPNs (licensed practical nurses). They must have a valid nursing license, and a variety of certifications including ALS and CPR. They must be able to remain calm and focused in a fast-paced environment under stressful conditions.
