The US Department of the Army has its marching orders. One of the three military departments (along with the Air Force and Navy) of the US Department of Defense, the Army provides ground-based military forces to deter and fight wars and protect the security of the US. The army has more than 675,000 soldiers, including active duty soldiers (nearly 75%) and reservists (Army National Guard and Army Reserves). Army personnel are deployed in about 80 countries. The Army operates about 40 forts throughout the US and has bases in Africa, Europe, Japan, the Middle East, and South Korea.

The fighting gamecocks lead the way at the University of South Carolina (USC). The university, which is made up of 14 colleges and schools, offers more than 350 courses of study in medicine, law, business, education, science and math, liberal arts, and other fields. Nearly 2,200 full-time faculty members teach a student body of some 41,500 on eight campuses. USC's main campus is located on the site of its 1801 founding, in the state's capital city of Columbia. Tuition is about $8,800 a year for residents and $23,000 for out-of-state students. USC has an endowment of some $440 million.

Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) helps keep the state green. The agency protects the air, land, and water resources in order to ensure the health of its citizens. Founded by the Arizona Legislature in 1986, the department's four divisions provides a wide variety of services ranging from pollution control to hazardous waste cleanups to laboratory analyses for contaminants. ADEQ also enforces environmental laws, offers education for the public, and works with organizations at a state and national level to develop environmental policy. In addition, the agency helps administer federal programs such as Clean Air Act and the Safe Drinking Water Act programs.
