The United States Postal Service (USPS) handles cards, letters, and packages sent both domestically and internationally. The USPS delivers 145 billion pieces of mail a year to some 153 million addresses in the U.S. and its territories. The independent government agency accepts no tax dollars and relies on postage to fund operations. Though USPS has a market dominant status on delivery of mail, it faces competition from other carriers for services such as package delivery. The USPS, much like a private sector company, is overseen by a Board of Governors. Nine of the eleven members are appointed by the President of the United States and confirmed by the U.S. Senate. The Board of Governors select the postmaster general, and together they name the deputy postmaster general; the two also serve on the board.

Fred Meyer Stores went out for groceries and wound up in Kroger's cart. Freddy's -- as the chain is known -- is a supercenter pioneer providing food and general merchandise to cost-conscious consumers in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. One of the largest supercenter operators in the US (along with Wal-Mart and Costco Wholesale), Fred Meyer's 125 multidepartment stores (averaging more than 165,000 sq. ft.) offer everything from apparel and home goods to groceries, consumer electronics, fuel, and jewelry. Its Web store delivers to the Alaska Bush. Kroger has leveraged Fred Meyer's general merchandising expertise as defense against Wal-Mart, which has overtaken Kroger as the #1 seller of groceries in the US.
Neither teetering nor tottering, Harris Teeter operates about 200 supermarkets in North Carolina and seven other southeastern states and the District of Columbia. Most of the regional chain's grocery stores feature niceties such as sushi bars, gourmet delis, cafes, and wine departments; many also house pharmacies. Harris Teeter, which also has a handful of distribution centers, is accelerating its growth in Maryland, northern Virginia, and the competitive Washington, D.C., market and nearby suburbs. Formed by the combination of Harris Super Markets and Teeter's Food Marts in 1960, Harris Teeter was acquired by holding company Ruddick in 1969. Harris Teeter accounts for more than 90% of its parent's sales.

Stop & Shop has been around for more than 100 years. We started small, back in 1914 when the Rabinowitz family opened a small grocery store in Somerville, MA. Four years later, they came up with the modern self-service supermarket and by 1947, the company had grown into a flourishing chain of 86 supermarkets. A real-life American dream come true. And the dream’s still going strong. Stop & Shop has become a household name to customers and a leader in the retail grocery industry, pioneering the superstore concept that everyone loves. We’ve accomplished a lot, like expanding and offering new products and technologies and providing top-level service to all of our customers. We will continue to do all of this, and more, far into the future.

As a division of the US Department of Commerce, the Census Bureau crunches and publishes statistical information collected every 10 years about the nation's economy, geography, and people, including housing statistics, community profiles, and education data. Known for tomes such as the Statistical Abstract of the United States, much of the agency's data is also available through its online product, American FactFinder, which also provides links to US and world population clocks.
