What does a Medical Laboratory Technologist do?
Medical laboratory techs perform a range of tests and other procedures in a medical laboratory setting. They prepare and analyze human tissue and other specimens. They ensure strict compliance to all standards and guidelines, particularly those related to maintaining sterile and structured conditions to prevent contamination or mishandling of specimens. They clean, maintain, and inspect lab equipment and tools. They prepare and file reports and other documentation.
Medical laboratory techs typically have an associate or bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory technology or a related field and have completed an accredited medical technology program. State licenses and other certifications are also usually required. They should have experience working in a medical lab setting. These techs must be highly organized, detail oriented, and have a strong commitment to accuracy and quality standards.
- Perform QC checks as outlined in policies and procedures.
- Review requisitions for completeness and appropriate routing.
- Duties may include phlebotomy and collection of lab specimens for the purpose of testing.
- Ensure outgoing results are accurate and reach providers in a timely manner.
- Communicate with clients (physician office staff and providers) to ensure appropriate specimen collection, handling, transport and result return.
- Maintain records of performance as defined in the laboratory's general and sectional policy and procedure manuals.
- Perform routine maintenance duties to support the functions of the department including, unpacking supplies, scheduled equipment maintenance, cleaning of workspaces and equipment.
- Bachelor's Degree in laboratory science or medical technology.
- Well-versed in ASCP protocols and procedures.
- Skilled in preparing accurate reports concerning the results of laboratory tests.
- Knowledge of laboratory ordering and specimen processing to ensure accurate test results.
- Experienced with writing protocols.
- In-depth understanding of HIPAA regulations.
