What does a Medical Technician do?
Medical technicians perform basic tasks related to medical analysis which are generally conducted in a laboratory setting. They often work under the supervision and guidance of a medical lab technologist. These technicians conduct or oversee the collection, organizing, testing, and storage of medical specimens. They are accountable for ensuring specimens are handled properly in strict compliance with safety and sanitation protocol and standards. They perform or assist with basic laboratory tests and procedures. They maintain and enforce quality control standards.
Medical technicians often have at least an associate degree in a scientific field and may have completed a medical technician training program. They generally must have a medical technician license or certification, and may also need other certifications. They should have hands-on experience performing simple procedures in a medical lab setting.
- Help charge nurses with the cleanliness of the nursing station, medication room and supply room.
- Support the leadership team, providing guidance and training for staff.
- Clean, assemble and sterilize instrument sets for surgery.
- Provide continued follow-up care needs with patients and families identified as being at higher risk for poor outcomes.
- Take vital signs and report observations and any change in condition to the nurse.
- Check on residents, ensure attendance at meals and activities.
- Cultivate a high level of candidate care and service during all stages of recruiting process.
- Assist the resident in maintaining a safe and clean environment.
- Frequent interruptions and changes in priorities based on needs of elder/clients.
- Observe and report changes in residents' condition and status.
- Follow through on the comprehensive care plan/service plan as developed for each individual elder/client.
- Prepare breakfast, snacks and other foods requested by clients.
- Responsible for housekeeping duties between regularly scheduled cleaning days.
- Interact with residents in a manner that displays warmth and promotes a caring environment.
- Ensure that the biomedical equipment is in compliance with applicable regulatory requirements and QC standards.
- Maintain professional working relationships with all associates, vendors, etc.
- Prepare, administer, and document prescribed medications per protocol.
- Bachelor's Degree in business, laboratory sciences, biological sciences or medical technology or equivalent experience.
- Dexterity and fluency with lab equipment including slides, workstations, and medical instrumentation.
- Demonstrated attention to detail and critical thinking skills.
- Comfortable making decisions and leading with confidence.
- Trained to work with pathogens.
- Will exhibit a positive attitude and willingness to strengthen inner-lab workings.
- Sound attention to details and business acumen.
