What does a Military Officer do?

Military officers are leaders within the armed forces who manage operations alongside enlisted personnel. If they work as a warrant officer they are technical and tactical experts in specific areas of the armed forces. They plan, organize, and lead troops through activities during military operations and manage enlisted personnel.

Military officers work in management and are problem solvers. Instead of enlisting in the service, they are typically commissioned to their positions and serve indefinitely at the pleasure of the president of the United States. They also manage operating command vehicles including aircraft, ships, or armored vehicles and provide military personnel with specific services including medical, legal, or engineering skills. A commissioned officer enters the military with a four-year college degree or higher. When appropriate, enlisted service members can advance or transition to a position of officer during their military career.
