What does a Network Technician do?
Network technicians implement, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair network and computer systems. They install and setup internet connections and establish different types of networks and connect them. Network technicians troubleshoot computer software and hardware issues, perform scheduled updates, and make repairs when necessary. They provide clients and end-users with technical support through various communication lines, including phones and secure networks against cyberattacks, by installing anti-virus software and updating it regularly.
Network technicians educate and train employees on the multiple facets of a company's network and consult with senior management about possible causes and solutions with network problems. They stay informed about the latest developments and select the best equipment and programs for a company, or request new equipment if the equipment in use becomes unreliable. Network technicians need at least a bachelor's degree in information systems, computer engineering, related fields, and industry-specific certification, including a Cisco Certified Network Associate.
- Evaluate needs for training and schedule training for staff.
- Lift boxes, tools, computers, service monitors, and other shop equipment.
- Perform the installation of radio and wireless mobile and base communications systems per industry practices and vendor criteria.
- Report any accidents, maintenance needs, or repairs to management while using any company vehicle.
- Manage all daily activities including monitoring, maintenance, tracking, reporting, and problem resolution for the digital support team.
- Work with business partners to ensure a fit for purpose solution is designed.
- Ensure that solutions and services deliver at or above expected business value.
- Identify and implement long term goals and strategies to advance unit.
- Analyze and comprehend diagnostic test results and use to repair and program radios and wireless equipment.
- Fill out and complete time sheets, job tickets, data entry.
- Manage and respond to business-partner feedback to enable continuous improvement.
- Manage internal operations projects that may require cross-department resources and coordination.
- Help to define key operational metrics, develop reporting, and set targets and continuously improve.
- Mentor, develop, motivate, and coach teams to work collaboratively and effectively.
- Participate in industry peer groups to understand industry trends and implements and recommends best practice solutions.
- Physical demands with activity or condition may include occasional to rare amount of time include walking, bending, reaching, standing, and stooping.
- Communicate with clients as needed to resolve support issues and coordinate with your Service Managers for escalation and emergencies.
- Identify user problems promptly, develop solutions and always maintain a high level of customer satisfaction.
- Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in information systems, computer science, engineering or information systems, or equivalent experience.
- Experience with Linux, VPN, UNIX and networking hardware processes and systems.
- Demonstrated problem solving and attention to details.
- Fluent in operating systems, VHF, UHF, antennas, and directories.
- Experience paging and splicing.
- Demonstrated solid work ethic.
- Can use writing protocols to compose reports and findings.
