What does an Obstetrician/Gynecologist do?

Obstetrician-gynecologists are physicians who provide care related to pregnancy, childbirth, and reproductive systems. They treat and counsel women throughout pregnancy and help deliver babies. They also diagnose and treat health issues specific to women, including breast cancer, cervical cancer, hormonal disorders, and menopause-related symptoms.

Obstetrician-gynecologists perform tests including pap smears, pelvic, and breast exams, and diagnose and prescribe treatments for disorders and diseases. They conduct routine patient check-ups and monitor and treat expectant mothers during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. Obstetrician-gynecologists record patients’ medical histories and educate them about diseases, prevention, detection, and reproductive health. They collaborate with other medical and non-medical personnel and remain up-to-date with current practices and innovations. Obstetrician-gynecologists need a doctor of medicine, four years of residency, board certification, and a state license.

What responsibilities are common for Obstetrician/Gynecologist jobs?
  • Prepare exam and treatment rooms with necessary equipment and supplies and assist physicians and nurse practitioners with procedures.
  • Obtain vitals and brief health history, escort patient to exam room, enter quality data into electronic medical record, and administer intramuscular and subcutaneous injections per orders.
  • Provide laborist daytime coverage, in-house obstetrics and gynecology call coverage with resident supervision, gynecologic surgery, supervision of the residency outpatient clinic, as well as caring for their own panel of patients.
  • Effectively communicate policies and procedures, order supplies, and assist in the office as needed by the office manager.
