What does a Non Patient-care Professional do?
Patient care professionals perform a range of support tasks to assist in the care of patients in a medical setting. These tasks include providing direct patient care or assisting with treatment procedures. They also help with basic daily patient needs such as meals and grooming. They support nurses and other staff in completing routine tasks. They may be responsible for clerical duties and may also perform some light housekeeping or maintenance tasks. Their role may also involve record-keeping and maintaining or organizing patient-related data and documents.
Patient care professionals have at least a high school diploma, and ideally have some experience in a healthcare support role. Depending on the specific position and location, there may be licensing or certification requirements. They must be organized and detail oriented. These roles require patience and good patient relations skills.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient and unit care data.
- Utilize patient communication boards and update each shift.
- Stock linen and supplies in patient holding as needed.
- Ensure collection of lab specimens by appropriate lab courier.

- Standing for long periods of time (8 to 12 hours).
- Fulfill all compliance responsibilities related to the position.
- Change bed linens, run errands, direct visitors, and answer telephone.
- Deal effectively with patients, visitors, situations, and other care team members, while maintaining emotional control.
- Communicate with food services to ensure appropriate patient diets.
- Provide clerical and secretarial services to the nursing unit.
- Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in nursing or business administration or GED/High School Degree and equivalent experience.
- Can collaborate using professionalism and leadership.
- A critical thinker who strives for continuous improvement.
- Can assist patients with life skills such as bathing, dressing, toileting, and grooming.
- Fluent in HIPAA procedure and protocols.
- Sound professionalism and time management skills.
- Comfortable with procedures such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation and ultrafiltration.
- Can adhere to writing protocols and send information such as PDFs, emails, and other correspondence to patients.
