There are no Tar Heels at North Carolina State University (NC State). Not to be confused with the actual Tar Heels at neighboring UNC, NC State has an enrollment of more than 34,000 students and approximately 8,000 faculty members. It has a student-teacher ratio of about 15:1. The university offers more than 200 undergraduate and graduate degree programs through about a dozen colleges. It also offers doctoral degrees in about 60 fields. In addition to its main campus in Raleigh, the university operates Centennial Campus, a research and and development facility that is home to corporate and government research partners, incubator companies, and university research units. NC State was founded in 1887.

San José State University (SJSU) is located on 154 acres in downtown San José, in the heart of California's Silicon Valley. Its seven colleges offer about 70 bachelor's and 65 master's degree programs in areas including art, business administration, psychology, nursing, accounting, and library science. The university says it is the oldest public institution of higher learning on the West Coast. It was founded in San Francisco in 1857 as a teachers' training school known as Minns' Evening Normal School; it later came under state control and moved to San José in 1871. SJSU became part of the California State University System in 1961. It has about 1,800 faculty members and an enrollment of some 30,000 students.

With its close proximity to New York City and annual sponsorship of some 500 cultural events, Hofstra University is a happening place. The private, nonsectarian four-year university has an annual enrollment of some 11,450 full- and part-time students. To encourage the success of its students, Hofstra maintains a low student-faculty ratio of 14 to 1. It offers more than 140 undergraduate program options and about 150 graduate program options in liberal arts and sciences; education, health, and human services; business; communications; and honors studies, and it has a School of Law and School of Medicine. Hofstra University was founded in 1935 by trustees of the estate of William and Kate Hofstra.

A historically African American institution of higher learning, Prairie View A&M University offers its 8,400 students baccalaureate degrees in about 50 academic majors, nearly 40 graduate degree programs, and four doctoral programs through nine colleges and schools. Its main campus in southeast Texas, home to the university's nine colleges and schools, is about 40 miles outside of Houston; its nursing college maintains a branch in that city's Texas Medical Center. Part of The Texas A&M University System, Prairie View A&M was founded in 1876 and was originally known as Alta Vista Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas for Colored Youth.

Oakwood University, a historically Black Seventh-day Adventist institution of higher learning, provides quality Christian education that emphasizes academic excellence; promotes harmonious development of mind, body, and spirit; and prepares leaders in service for God and humanity.

Founded as Biddle Memorial Institute, Johnson C. Smith University has historically benefited from generous benefactors, like the Biddles and the Smiths. The independent, private, coeducational institution of higher learning enrolls about 1,400 students a year. It confers bachelor's degrees to hundreds of students each year in 32 different majors. The historically African-American university aims to provide an outstanding educational experience for a diverse group of students from various ethnic, socioeconomic, and geographical backgrounds.It offers a liberal education curriculum, in conjunction with focused study in specialized fields, in preparation for advanced study and careers.
