The name really says it all for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The lead federal agency for protecting the health and safety of US citizens, the CDC investigates health problems, performs research, and develops public health policies as well as developing and applying disease prevention and control. It is one of the major operating components of the Department of Health and Human Services and comprises seven coordinating centers and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. The CDC, which has nine US locations and workers in more than 50 countries, partners with public and private entities to improve the flow of information throughout the health care community.

Swine flu prep to disaster response, Health and Human Services (HHS) takes care of people and their health. The agency's 300-plus programs cover everything from immunizations and food safety to Medicare and emergency preparedness. It also provides services for low-income families, Head Start (pre-school), domestic violence and child abuse prevention, and substance abuse treatment and prevention. HHS uses about a quarter of all federal funds; its 2011 budget is $911 billion. Its agencies include National Institutes of Health, Food and Drug Administration, and Centers for Disease Control. Access for all, that could be the rallying cry of Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).
