Rush University Medical Center is a not-for-profit, 664-bed academic medical center in Chicago. It is nationally and internationally known for many specialties of care, areas of research and its new hospital building, the Tower.

Established in 1912 and a full university since 1961, the University of California at San Diego (UCSD) is a scientific powerhouse. Children's Hospital Boston is an elder in the world of pediatric care. The 400-bed hospital offers acute health care and specialty services for children from birth to age 21. The medical center is also Harvard Medical School's main teaching hospital for children's health care, and it is the world's largest pediatric research center. Its John F. Enders Pediatric Research facility provides research for the treatment of childhood diseases. Specialty services include cardiovascular surgery, digestive care, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, transplants, blood diseases, and fetal care. The not-for-profit hospital was founded in 1869.

Predating the American Revolution, Columbia University (founded as King's College in 1754) is the fifth-oldest institution of higher learning in the US. With a student population of about 25,000 and faculty of more than 3,600, the Ivy League university's main campus spreads across 36 acres in Manhattan. Columbia has three undergraduate schools and 13 graduate and professional schools that grant degrees in about 100 disciplines, including its well-known programs in literature, law, and medicine. Columbia's community of alumni, faculty, and researchers has produced about 80 Nobel laureates, including nine of its current faculty. Columbia operates four affiliated colleges and seminaries in New York City.
