What's NU? With its main campus in the Chicago suburb of Evanston, Northwestern University (NU) serves its 16,500 students through around a dozen schools and colleges such as the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the Medill School of Journalism. Its Chicago campus houses the schools of law and medicine, as well as several hospitals of the McGaw Medical Center. With a faculty of 2,500, the school has a student-teacher ratio of 7:1. NU is home to several research centers and community outreach programs; it also has a branch in Qatar. It is the only private member of the Big 10 conference; varsity sports include baseball, football, basketball, and fencing.

As the 8th largest private employer in metro Milwaukee, the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) brings together inquisitive minds in science, medicine, education and community engagement to solve the toughest challenges in health. Massachusetts General Hospital (Mass General) is hardly general. The 200-year-old acute care hospital is Harvard Medical School's original and largest teaching hospital. With some 900 beds, Mass General has its main campus in Boston and operates several health centers in surrounding communities. Its specialized medical departments include cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, and diabetes and endocrinology. As a leading research facility, Mass General hosts a gaggle of clinical trials and has an annual research budget approaching $700 million. The hospital is a founding member of the Partners HealthCare System (along with Brigham and Women's).

"No child should die in the dawn of life." -Danny Thomas, Founder, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Over 70 years ago, Danny Thomas was a young entertainer with a baby on the way. Work wasn't easy to come by, and his despair grew. He turned to St. Jude Thaddeus, the patron saint of hopeless causes, and vowed, "Show me my way in life, and I will build you a shrine." The Spartan population is anything but spartan, at least at Michigan State University (MSU). With an enrollment of roughly 47,000 students, MSU dominates the town of East Lansing. It offers more than 200 programs of study through 17 colleges. MSU is the only university in the country with three on-campus medical schools, graduating allopathic (MD) and osteopathic (DO) physicians, as well as veterinarians (DVMs). Its research breakthroughs range from the cross-fertilization of corn in the 1870s to developing a top-selling anticancer drug in the 1960s. MSU was founded in 1855 as a land-grant college under the name Agricultural College of the State of Michigan. It became a full university a century later.
