What does a Social Studies Teacher do?
Social studies teachers provide instruction in subjects that fall under the heading of social studies, a broad educational category that encompasses history, current events, social sciences, and politics, among other subjects. The specific role and duties will vary depending on the grade level and academic environment, but teachers prepare lesson plans, explain the significance of historical events, and discuss current political events of major concern or historical importance. They devise creative ways to make the material interesting and relevant to students.
Social studies teachers typically have at least a bachelor’s degree in education or a social studies field. Teaching experience is preferred. They must have a valid teaching certificate or license in their state. Must be able to present information in a way that generates interest from students.
- Encourage students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
- Cooperate with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods.
- Assist in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
- Assess the progress of students on a regular basis and provide progress reports as required.
- Present a positive role model for students that support the mission of the school district.
- Teach assigned course(s) by delivering appropriate course content to students, preparing course materials and lesson plans, and addressing students questions and/or concerns.
- Develop and maintain a classroom environment conducive to effective learning within the limits of the resources provided by the district.
- Attend faculty meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
- Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
- Use appropriate technologies to strengthen and enhance the teaching and learning process.
- Consistently monitor student achievement through formative and summative assessments.
- Ensure that students achieve and demonstrate mastery of stated learning objectives.
- Review data and documents for compliance and accuracy.
- Strong handle on keeping pace with curriculum, comfortable with creating lesson plans, assessments, projects and tests.
- Maintain knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by attending staff development training, workshops, seminars and conferences.
- Ensure safety and security requirements are met in the classroom area.
- Work cooperatively with special education teachers/staff to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established by Individual Education Plan (IEP).
- Support and adapt to change and to demonstrate commitment to continuous performance improvement.
- Graduate's Degree in social studies and certification to teach.
