What does a Tax Consultant do?

Tax consultants are experts in tax liability and tax deductions. They prepare tax returns and check for deductions to lower a client's tax burden, and help clients to write trusts and estates. They educate clients about taxes on rental property income, and help define and sort tax implications surrounding life events like a marriage, a birth or death, or a divorce. They also help with managing inheritance issues, charitable giving, or a complex tax situation.

Tax consultants educate clients about various financial issues including trusts and estates, or retirement taxes, and they stay informed about new tax laws and requirements on both the federal and state levels. They may be called upon to meet a client at their location to advise or help reduce their tax liability. They help their clients to make informed decisions about their specific tax-related issues, and they assess and research the problematic situations to identify solutions and determine tax savings and to recommend strategies that will improve a client's liability. Tax consultants have a degree in accounting, taxation, or related fields.
