What does a Traffic Coordinator do?
Traffic coordinators act as liaisons between different areas in organizations or companies, anticipate and troubleshoot problems, coordinate simultaneous plans, oversee scheduling, and develop solutions for workflow delays. They work with various departments, individuals, and organizations to ensure materials and resources flow through promptly and communicate with individuals at different levels in the organization and may sometimes be required to prepare a budget and progress reports for upper management.
Traffic coordinators work with outside customers or internal departments to develop schedules for delivery of products or resources and monitor the flow of materials or resources to ensure on-time delivery. They create work schedules in various departments to ensure work completes on time, and they confirm that work progresses on schedule by monitoring communication and working between departments. Traffic coordinators prepare daily priority lists, weekly project status reports, and project budgets and communicate potential problems to project teams while recommending tangible solutions. Traffic coordinators need a bachelor's degree in marketing, business, communications, or related fields.
- Maintain a safe work zone that ensures that traffic stays out of the way of workers.
- Responsible for setting up and removing temporary cones, signs, variable message boards, and safety barriers that show traffic where to drive, as well as holding up signs that tells traffic to either stop or to proceed slowly.
- Support project as flagger as needed to create a safe work area.
- Responsible for the equipment used in day to day operations.
- Complete daily logs (vehicle, time, project, etc.) timely and accurately.
- Operate company trucks to transport materials and equipment to job site.
- Coordinate temporary traffic control with other construction sites in the area to assure traffic/pedestrian safety and flow.
- Install, remove and reset delineators, signs, posts and support.
- Assemble, deliver, and pick up safety products from job sites.
- Pick up traffic control items at beginning and end of shift and load into the truck.
- Ensure that tasks are completed in accordance with all applicable company, local, state and federal rules and regulations.
- Build and maintain an overall scheduling process that includes proper assignment of appropriate resources to monitor and communicate deliverables and deadlines in a timely manner.
- Bachelor's Degree in business or information technology.
- Strong command of English language.
- Able to lead job site team and instruct/monitor and train crew members on safety and job assignments.
- Capable of lifting at least 50 pounds and standing for extended periods of time.
- Solid decision making and multitasking abilities.
