I applied to 4 jobs last week. Two companies replied that thy are reviewing my application and I have an interview tomorrow with a third. The company I'm interviewing with is the one I'm least interested in of the four, though it is better than my current job. What is the etiquette if I'm offered a job with this company but I want to wait and see what response I get from the other 3? Should I tell the company I need a couple weeks to decide, or be up front that I'm waiting for other offers? Or?
Wait until you get an official offer letter. This is the best advice I ever received from a very well-known recruiter. Then you have something to counter with for the other positions. Also, do not worry about having an interview. It will still take time for them to go through the process to hire you if they want to. And until you actually start, you can tell them you are no longer interested in the position, even if it’s one week before hand. I’ve had many people do this and that and they come back with more money for you to stay with them. And if they ask you to start within a week, just advise that you have to close up projects with your current position and want to ensure that you give at least a two week notice. That will also give you time to see if you hear back from your two preferred other companies.
Like62I wouldn’t say you wait but had been in talks and you need time to decide to evaluate each offer and to see which aligns best
Like14You got some good advice in previous comments :) To add: be open-minded when interviewing. Even if the position currently might seem as the least interesting one - things might change as you meet the Hiring Manager, learn more about the company, role... Also, consider following up with these other companies you applied to. You may want to give them a call at the beginning of the next week to get an overview of your applications and to get clearer on what you can expect. Wish you all the best!
Like21Unless there’s a contract involved, you could always take the job. Worst case: you’re like half the other people out there working at a job you don’t like. Try to push your start date if things are getting close with another employer. I can’t tell you how many people have accepted a job and then called back and said they were going another way. Or how many just didn’t even show up. You don’t want to risk looking like you’re too transient and unreliable, but a little hiccup like this doesn’t scare me, as a manager, on someone’s résumé.
Like15No company will give you a couple of weeks to decide. After sending you an offer they will likely expect an answer within 24-48 hours. You can always accept an offer and then decline once you get a better offer. But keep in mind, you will burn a bridge doing that so make sure you’re ok with that. In the end, you have to do what’s best for you.
Like19Sometimes it’s not about the job itself, but the people. Pay very close attention to how you’re treated during the interview process and the questions they ask you. If they don’t really care to bother to know who you are as a person and only ask you boilerplate interview questions the entire time, it’s not worth your time and they have no culture. Regarding your question, if you move forward in the interview process with those other companies, don’t bring them up until you have an offer in hand from them. An offer is your negotiating tool. If you don’t get offers, don’t mention them.
Like6Remember you are interviewing them just as much as they are interviewing you. Great advice above to pay attention to other people around during your interview. Always as if the position is and add to staff or if someone left... is add to staff due to company growth? Did someone leave cuz they were promoted ? What is onboarding process? This is important. If it is not planned out, chances are career paths are and employees are not a priority for co. Find out what your manager span of control is. . Will they have any time to coach/ develop you & get you in front of the right people to help you grow at the company. My random thots for today... best of luck!!!
Like1I think you should not worry yourself about what ifs. Go to the interview and see what happens. You may get there and realize it’s really not a fit for you.
Like2You are worried about the wrong thing....better get the job first. Right now you dont have anything to worry about cause you havnt been given an offer by anyone. You may not have any decision to make at all if they all turn you down...so why worry.
