I have heard that mental health work and getting a psychology degree will doom me to a low salary. Is there anyone on here who makes over $70,000? If so, what job do you have? I want to help peoples mental health, but I also want to feel like I’m getting paid for all the education that I’m going to have to do. I know people in the military or working at amazon making $70,000+ with only a bachelors degree.
You need a 4 year college degree in Psychology, a 5 year doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology, and another year of training to seek licensure. Then, you can help people and you will make six figures in a full time job.
Like15It depends on what you want to do in mental health. I’m an LCSW. I work as a Care Manager at a hospital and I make almost 90K. If you want to do counseling, it’s all about filling your schedule. If you work full time and evenings/weekends in counseling you can make over 100K.
Like10What if you have your bachelors degree in psychology are there any jobs other than case planning that you guys recommend?

Like2I have a PsyD and make a little over 110,000 a year in private practice. I have 150,000 in student loans. It’s not exactly the promise of paying off your loans quickly that a medical doc would expect unfortunately.
Like5Depends on what you want to do, where you are, and what avenue you use to pursue your goals. I have a masters degree and undergrad degree. Plenty of opportunities are there to make over 6 figures in the field without getting a PhD. You can work for a healthcare tech company, do assessment work, and even therapy (cash pay). If you’re good at what you do, money finds you but if you’re not going to be diligent then you’ll likely end up with a basic job that has average or less than average pay
Like7I got my masters in mental health counseling and wasn’t getting paid well. Left, got my nursing degree and I’m a lot more satisfied with that. A friend of mine did the same but got her PhD in nursing psych. She makes a lot of money
Like6I’m an LPC in private practice and can easily make 6 figures. It really depends on where you go in the field. I would suggest private practice as you profit the most financially with possibly less burnout but also factor in heath insurance etc. but it’s possible
Like3you will need to specialize past the psych degree typically. I know BCBAs who make between 75 - 100K
Like4I have a masters in forensic psychology. I haven’t been able to find work for over 6 months now. I need something remote or hybrid. Does anyone know anywhere that is actually hiring? Thank you!
Like1I am an LCPC in Maryland and make around $85k doing intakes and and no caseload. I’ve also been offered position where I can make six figures depending on how many clients I see. It really depends on 1) if you have an advanced degree 2) if you’re licensed and 3) how much you’re willing to work.
Like6Most of the psychology field is pretty bleak in terms of salary. Most case managers I know make about $50k to $60k a year with a masters here in Western New York. You have to land a state job in the prison system here if you want over that in most cases. I cannot speak for other places, but there’s a huge need for case managers, coordinators, etc. here in WNY. So, there’s usually a little wiggle room.
Like3I have worked in mental and behavioral health for 10+ years with no prior experience or education in the field. I started as a tech at a program and just soaked everything up. I now run a boutique consultancy and own the program where I got my start as well as another. I have people who work with me who are making upwards of 100,000 a year, and clinicians who are hitting 200,00+. It’s there if you work hard, take advantage of the connections, and have some inherent talent with people.
Like3I traveled through a nsg agency for about 4.5 yrs. I made a very comfortable salary, my last yr was at 110,000. I loved it, my kids were grown, just my husband and I.
Like2Find a mentor who you trust and trusts you. Decide what your dream role looks like. I’m not a first gen but I’m the first social worker in my family and I have my lcsw. I made 95k last year 73k from full time job and the rest from consulting on a very minimal basis. Whatever you want do is attainable but find people who are willing to answer questions and support your goals
Like1Psych Nurse Practitioners are in demand and can make an average of $110-140k/yr depending on location. There are also many remote work at home positions. It’s primarily medication management so if therapy is your primary focus this wouldn’t be the best option. But it certainly pays better than $70k.
Like2Not without a masters.

Like1I have a Child Psychologist degree since 2007 and to this day have not been able to work in my degree profession. I have over 20 + years in Medical Billing and I’m at a point wondering if I went to school for nothing. Are they any jobs out here making over $65,000 with a Bachelor’s Degree???
LikeWhatever you do - you’ll need a masters degree in something related to psychology or social work if you ever want to make any decent money. And in some cases, even with a masters, the salary still is low.
