Former Intern - User Experience Designer

I worked at Amazon for less than a year

Pros

nice people and flexible time schedules

Cons

not giving you the best necessary tools you need for the job

Current Employee - Logistics Analyst

I have been working at Penske Truck Leasing full-time for more than 3 years

Pros

- The job is challenging and the company expects you to grow and expand your role. - Well-defined career paths and mentor opportunities with good managers. - Promote from within. Everyone I know... who has worked for the company for at least three years has been promoted if they pursued the opportunity. - Team environment lifts you up, but individual responsibilities ground you and give you opportunities to excel. - Compensation is about average, except for retirement benefits. Not many companies have a defined benefit pension anymore. - I am largely allowed to develop my own schedule based around my role. Naturally, if someone in PST wants an afternoon meeting, I'm screwed, but on most work days I can start early at 5 or 6 am and be done in the early afternoon and have the rest of the day to enjoy myself or I can sleep in and start late if I have to muscle through a 1900 meeting with California.

Cons

- The job is challenging and the company expects you to grow and expand your role. - Work/Life balance can be challenging - especially in the age of COVID. I feel like Penske has taken over my house.... My manager does make sure everyone is able to use all their vacation and tasks are shared so at least everyone is overburdened equally. - No real telecommuting policy before COVID. Now, the job is 100% telecommuting. My light bill has gone up $50 and now Comcast is sending me nasty emails saying I am over my monthly data limit. I didn't even know I had a data limit.

Advice to Management

- Stop paying for that stupid granite edifice to the 20th century in Green Hills. My client is 3000 miles away. There is no reason I ever need to walk into that beige nightmare again. You get at... least 8 or 9 hours of real work out of me every day during COVID instead of EVERYONE spending half the day BSing around the office. I am healthier, happier, and I spend my entire day surrounded by people who love me: my dog, my children, and my wife. PLEASE learn from the lesson of COVID and develop a real telecommuting policy. Yes, there is value in in-person communication, but we have proven we don't need to do it every day, all day. - Reorganize to take advantage of COVID. Hire that kid in Montana who might be perfect for this job that you can pay peanuts instead of limiting yourself to the labor market of the exurbs of Philadelphia. Let me take advantage of a career opportunity in Beechwood without having to live in Cleveland. Yuck.
