Current Employee - Technologist

I have been working at American Water full-time for more than a year


I am a 15 year vet and have been here with AW for 2 years. Some things to think about as you plan the next step in your career. I have more power to control my destiny here than anywhere else I've... ever worked. -So many places I have worked, you have to climb the career "ladder" and wait for opportunities to arise through attrition to improve your skills or increase your responsibility. Here if you have the passion, cultural alignment, aptitude, and drive to produce outcomes in a variety of technology areas, the T&I leadership team supports employee growth like no other place I've ever worked. The executive leadership team is the number one supporter of the technology strategy. -In most corporate environments, technology is seen as a cost center that is necessary to run and maintain what's already in place. Armies of project managers, business analysts, and coordinators spend their days trying to manage vendors performing much of the work while keeping a strong focus on driving down total cost of ownership. Almost the entirety of the focus is in maintaining lists, reacting to issues, and managing the work of others. At AW, technology is a strong driver of value creation. We are making investments in new technology that create value for our customers, the company, and the water sector at large. And everyone who works here is contributing to that strategy directly. Our executive leadership team right on up to the CEO are active participants in this investment for the company. If you want proof, look up our CEO, COO, and investor relations interviews and press releases. Technology is highlighted is almost every single communication. Cutting edge technology combined with the stability of a large, successful corporation. -There are very few places you can work where you will learn and deploy the most cutting edge technology available (microservices, big data, analytics, machine learning, geospatial, product development) working with the tech directly everyday and at the same time have the amazing benefits you get from working for a stable corporate entity (market salaries, bonus, excellent 401k match, stock discounts). Excellent teammates -I don't love everyone I work with :) and no matter where you work, that will always be the case. However, there are so many bright people here and everyone is dedicated to delivering on our strategy. The camaraderie is strong and we are all marching towards the same goal. Most of the people here are reasonable and willing to help. Considering how much time you spend in your life with your work colleagues, its important to be happy working with them. And I can say unequivocally, I enjoy working with my colleagues immensely and look forward to coming to work everyday.


You'll see some bad reviews on here but keep in mind that not everyone is the right fit for an organization that basically turned its technology strategy upside down. Think about all the companies... where tech has thrived and how long it took to see the investments head into the black. There will always be naysayers when you make such radical changes to the way you operate. And it can be hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel for those executing the change. But if you want to drastically change your outcomes and the basic principles of how you operate a technology division, you will inevitably ruffle some feathers along the way. The anonymity of the internet has the unfortunate effect of highlighting those voices sometimes.

Advice to Management

Remember our mantra - culture eats strategy for breakfast. Don't fall into the traps that many other organization can't avoid. Don't play favorites; follow through on promises made related to... performance, advancement, opportunity; listen to your brightest people; and remember that people are at the center of making this a success. Treat them like family and they'll pay you back 10 fold.
