Current Employee - Senior Assistant Editor

I have been working at BioMed Central full-time for more than a year

Pros

The job is fairly easy to do once you have been fully trained. The staff are nice and there is some room for progression. The working week is only 35 hours and there is no need to take work home so... it's very easy to have a work/life balance. The social aspects of the job are good.

Cons

The job is very repetitive so it can become dull quite quickly. Outside of progressing into management it is very hard to progress. If you have a PhD you can move further up the editorial ladder,... otherwise most people move to different positions within Springer Nature or leave the company. The turnover in the team is really high for a number of reasons including: salary expectations, ability to progress and wanting a change in role and responsibility. The job no longer offers flexible working hours.

Advice to Management

Find more ways to make the job interesting and provide staff with more experience so they can progress further in publishing. Salaries have been increased recently, but they could still be higher to... be in line with other publishing jobs. Flexible working hours should be brought back/part of the contract. The rest of London is moving to flexi-time as it's better for the staff and the for the Company, so it seems at odds to have working hours restricted.
