Cons

Former Employee - Accountant

I worked at Sullivan & Company full-time for more than 5 years

Pros

I started at Sullivan & Company shortly after graduating college. I did not have an accounting degree and I had very little accounting experience. By the time I had finished, I had obtained a CPA... license, supervised two new employees at a time, and handled around 30 clients at any given time. Sullivan & Company is a fantastic place to get a wide range of skills. Bookkeeping, payroll, sales tax, income tax, and attestation (compilation and review only) are all going to be part of your job. It is fantastic to get to learn just about every part about small-business accounting. You will not be pigeon-holed into one area. The thing that really sets Sullivan & Company apart is their emphasis on communication to clients. This is a more practical part of the job, and not something that is taught in school, or anywhere else that I have found. Very early on you will be expected to communicate with clients. Overall, the partner does not want to be bothered with day-to-day communication with clients. After two or three years you will practically be handling the entire job yourself. There is a great deal of independence you get from a job like this. After a while your clients get to know you and you are their reliable source for all finance-related questions for their business. The supervisors at Sullivan & Company leave detailed review notes in writing. They will give you the job back if you do not do it correctly. This is by far the best way I have seen to master tax returns, bookkeeping, and financial statements. They don't expect you to do every correctly right away, but after a year or two you will be able to handle the job on your own. Overall Sullivan & Company gave me skills along with confidence and a great emphasis on communication. I could not imagine a better place to start your accounting career.

Cons

If you are a "same as last year," let's do this the easy way, not the correct way type of accountant, this job probably isn't for you. Paul and Raj expect you to do the right thing for the clients,... and always learn new things every year.

Advice to Management

Continue to change, adopt, try new things, get new clients, grow.
