Current Employee - Technologist Engineer I

I have been working at FIS full-time for more than a year

Pros

- The FISU program offers participants events with internal employees and subject matter experts for training and discussion. - The person that interviewed me for the FISU program was very kind and... personable (as is basically every other person I've met in the company so far). The main focus was on prior internships and jobs, experience in college, etc. and not on technical exams which can be extremely stressful on new grads in tech. This was the same for everyone in the FISU program that I spoke to. Very happy about this since so many companies end up missing out on great talent due to poorly formatted whiteboard questions and nerves. If you can explain your history in tech, you're probably prepared to interview for the program. - My manager is amazing- understanding and kind. When we were stuck on a team that didn't offer programming, my manager worked with us to ensure we got put on another team so we could put our skills from college/internships/prior jobs to good use. - My PMs value input from us- something that is unfortunately uncommon - I've been able to get experience not just as a developer, but also as PM which has given me a better understanding of the role and helped to be confident that moving to a PM/PO/SM position later in my career - Great benefits, company gives us a couple hundred into our HSA if we have the High Plan. Every time I've contacted the insurance company, they've been very helpful. Not left on the line for ages.

Cons

- We're in the middle of a major reorganization of management to ease the number of people attached to each manager as well as moving the rest of our teams to Agile, so I expect some growing pains... while we settle into all of it. It's going well so far, though. If done correctly, it'll make our organization even stronger. - I didn't get any communication to set up my first interview (social), so it caught me off guard and I hadn't prepared for it like I would have (looking more into the company's history, projects, what companies FIS has merged with recently, etc.), but the interviewer was understanding and made sure I was completely set up with a date and time for my second interview (technical). Make sure you send out emails to ensure your candidates know when to expect a call so they can put their best foot forward!

Advice to Management

Let your FISU participants experience roles outside of what they joined if they express interest like my managers did for me. You'd be surprised at how well a lot of them could do. It lets employees... know that you trust that they are responsible enough to lend a hand to people outside of their immediate role. If they end up liking the work they did, you've got one more employee that could be put under consideration for a role they'd be good at that already has some amount of experience within your organization. Knowing that people appreciate the work I put in and allowing me to explore tasks from other roles when time allowed solidified that I really enjoyed the positions that I had been planning on moving toward in my career. It's easy to go from developer to management. Not so easy to go backward a lot of the time.
