    Current Employee - Manager

I have been working at GLG full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

In challenging times, you get to see what a company and its people are really made of. And in 2020, with all of the challenges of Covid and work from home, GLG has shined, both in the way it has... taken care of its employees and the way it has interacted with its community. The company has been extremely transparent with employees about how the company is reacting to Covid and WFH. And with all the financial uncertainty of 2020, GLG was able to maintain its full workforce (and even give US employees extra time off at the end of the year). GLG has really evolved in the past year to 18 months. It has put a premium on hiring newer senior leaders who recognize that the success of the company relies on its ability to given junior employees a reason to stay and grow at the company. So while there will always be a focus on metrics, just like any for profit enterprise, there is also much more focus on employee experience, and there is starting to be more concerted effort to give junior and midlevel managers quality training. Like most companies, despite good intentions, GLG has faced challenges when it comes to diversity and inclusion, particularly in hiring and retention. But particularly since the racial justice awakening following the murder of George Floyd, GLG has gone from talking about diversity and inclusion, to acting on it. This has include establishing diversity networks that have promoted legitimate and real discussions among employees and managers about difficult social topics, and also led to great opportunities to hear from powerful outside speakers (most recently for Black History Month). GLG has hired its first Chief Diversity Officer who is helping hone and accelerate its efforts. And there have been clear and successful efforts to start adding diversity to senior leadership and to increase diversity at junior levels of the company.

    Cons

Someone else commented that GLG is sometimes a 2,000 person company that acts like a 200 person company. To me, that is a largely a reflection of rapid growth and an ever evolving business... environment. There have definitely been strides in the past few years in focusing our resources on what we do well, rather than trying to do everything at once. But, of course, like any company, there is continued room for improvement.

    Advice to Management

Keep continuing to be unafraid to listen to and engage with employees, and keep hiring empathetic, thoughtful and diverse leaders.
