Former Intern - Building Systems Group Engineer Co-op

I worked at Messer Construction for more than a year

Pros

Good opportunity to learn about the construction managment industry with good hands on experience.

Cons

More management than technical position

Current Employee - Estimator

I have been working at Danis full-time

Pros

What sets Danis apart from others in the Raleigh area is that this company treats their own employees the right way. They understand that you are human and may need to take a doctor's appointment in... the middle of the day. Other companies I have worked for would ask you to reschedule your appointment to a time that is more convenient for the company. I also like that Danis prides themselves on their integrity and ethics. I am able to come in to work every day knowing that I work for a great company, and that we produce great products that are accurate with the current construction market. The cost certainty that is listed on their website, "96% of our projects are 1% to 3%," is very admirable in the construction industry. Not a lot of other companies can say that they have such accuracy. As an employee, you are not micromanaged and have freedom to try new things to see if you can make a process better. I like being a part of the change that is going on, as Danis is competing in various markets in the Triangle area. This company is likely not for you if you are looking for a "bro/frat" mentality, if you're not a self-starter, if you expect to call subcontractors and try to gut their costs, or if you don't treat people well. We like to play fair, we believe that people deserve to get paid for their services, and we learn from any mistakes made as a group. You are encouraged to network and build rapport with subcontractors, which is a good thing.

Cons

This is a minor "con." The Raleigh office approaches estimating differently than other Danis offices, which may be difficult when you are seeking resources at another office to help the Raleigh work... flow. I'm not saying all offices should be the same, but it is just something to be aware of.

Advice to Management

It's great that Danis offers health insurance, but it is the bare minimum. For such a great company to work for and how they treat their employees, I was shocked to find out that they offer only a... high deductible health insurance program with an HSA. I would like to see more options; maybe no deductible or a small deductible. I was so used to paying only a co-pay when I visited a doctor at the 3 other companies that I worked for. I guess that is not the norm at this company.
