Former Employee - Analyst

I worked at NERA Economic Consulting full-time for more than 3 years

Pros

The comments below pertain specifically to the anti-trust group of the NYC office (as the firm operates in a very segmented manner between the different practice groups and offices). There is no... lack of opportunity in this group as long as you are willing to put in the time and effort. In your first year, you will gain a great deal of data analytics experience (which is invaluable in this day and age) as you are the person in the weeds of the data, cleaning and running analyses on it. In your second year, you are given more responsibility and may oversee a small workstream within a larger project. In your third year onwards, if you have performed up to par in your previous two years, you will actually be given a project to manage and 3-11 researchers to oversee (in multi-billion dollar mergers and acquisitions, how cool is that?). You will be stressed and you will be worked, but you will have learned more in the first year in this job than 2 at most others.

Cons

The hours are rough and unpredictable BUT this in and of itself isn't a con because you are compensated handsomely for the time that you put in. If you're expecting a 40 hour job and a $100k+ salary... out of college you should have studied CS. Otherwise, this job compensates you very well and in return demands a great deal of hours and diligence.

Advice to Management

Sometimes opportunities are awarded to those that are smooth talkers but aren't able to back that talk with quality work. I would rely on senior researchers more to determine the "fakers" and the... noteworthy researchers when selecting the next class of project managers.
