Advice to Management
I disagree with the other review about the state of the RTS landscape. When observing the hype and success behind a number of other strategy games, it is clear that strategy games are still a... powerful force in the market. The simple fact is that Dawn of War 3 had to compete with Warhammer Total War, which was impossible competition. However, another simple fact is that Dawn of War 3 and to an extent Dawn of War 2 are very watered down RTS experiences that have stripped away many of the elements that fans enjoyed about earlier installments in the series. It makes me wonder exactly who the target audience was, was it the MOBA crowd? Was it a more casual RTS audience? It certainly didn't seem to be the core RTS gamers. With a few exceptions, such as Grey Goo and Starcraft 2, gamers have simply not been allowed to play traditional RTS games. The market simply will not provide them. This means that there is an underserved niche, and to say that RTS games aren't doing well and avoid making them simply because there haven't been many on the market is a self fulfilling and self perpetuation prophecy. Warhammer 3 did more poorly than expected not because it was an RTS game, but because it did not do enough to appeal to people who play Strategy Games while competing against a Leviathan. My advise would be to go back to basics, look at what the earliest installments in the Dawn of War series did right.
