Current Employee - Audit Senior

I have been working at Plante Moran full-time for more than 3 years

Pros

Plante Moran has been one of the Top 100 companies to work for for 21 years, and the company strives to live up to that title. Everyone, from the partners to the staff, strives to make Plante the... best team environment it can be. When you start, you are assigned a a buddy with slightly more experience as well as a team partner to help with any questions or issues that you may encounter. They also takes an interest in your goals and how you want to grow within the firm so that both you and the firm benefit. I also gained a lot of varied experience at Plante Moran. Due to being middle market, staff are able to work a wider variety of clients throughout the year as well as getting exposure to a lot of different sections of the audit. By the end of my first year, I had touched almost every section of the audit including helping prepare financial statements.

Cons

All the cons associated with Plante are the ones that you would see from other public accounting firms, though perhaps not as severe. Busy season is stressful, and there is a lot of learning on the... job, which can be frustrating at times no matter how much others are helping you. However, all the support mentioned above very much helps lessen these issues.

Current Employee - Manager

I have been working at BKD full-time for more than 8 years

Pros

To name a few, the wide variety of clients and the ability to take on responsibilities early on, consistent access/mentorship by the leadership team, a clearly-defined but customizable career path... and great training/ support. Even though it's public accounting, I don't feel like I have to choose between my family and my job - I can flex my time and the leadership team trusts me to prioritize. I've seen a lot of positive changes in my 10 years at BKD from when I started, most of which have come from employee engagements surveys/ ideas from internal employees. No mandatory rotations means I can keep my family in one place, but we're big enough (and continuing to grow) that I could move if I wanted to. The ability to choose my specialization rather than be told where the firm needs me has been and always will be a selling point for me. For accountants, we're creative and strategic in how we innovate and I'm glad to be a part of it. BKD also really helped me to develop as a professional supporting my efforts in the community/ on local boards, etc. Non-discretionary Profit Share is 5% annually - better than a 401k match to me.

Cons

Standard cons with a pubic accounting firm - longer hours ahead of peak deadlines and an every-changing knowledge base in the industry can be stressful to keep on top of. While compensation... adjustments seem to be in line with market standards overall, I'd like to see a performance-based bonus for certain milestones.

Advice to Management

Do a good job at this already, but continue to be transparent about changes - internal or external.
