Advice to Management

Empower engineers that do the work, not your managers

Current Employee - IT Manager

I have been working at Solatube full-time for more than a year

Solatube has an exceptional corporate culture that is very supportive to new employees, rewarding hard work with public recognition which makes employees feel highly valued. The corporate culture is... relaxed, yet driven, and team members with the motivation to change things for the better are always given a chance to shine. Having been in a position to interact with every single member of the administrative team, I have found the entire group to be supportive, accommodating and warm while still keeping a sharp eye on our mission of bringing a better quality of light to everyone. Unusual for my field, I have been fortunate to enjoy a great deal of acceptance and (more importantly) trust from the executive team and the projects that I've considered critical with been met with approval. Solatube has been willing to invest in improving their mission-critical computing platforms, which is really an investment in the workforce itself that pays huge dividends. All employees enjoy excellent benefits, and compensation is at or above market which contributes to the sense of employee value mentioned earlier. Overall, my two years of tenure here have been productive and rewarding, and I'm very glad I joined the team when I did.

While the company makes an effort to communicate milestones and important announcements at regular all-hands meetings and occasional email broadcasts, I do think there needs to be more structured... communication between teams and employees. In my view, it would benefit Solatube enormously to implement channels of communication that allow everyone's efforts to be just a little more aligned. This is common to all companies on some level, but improvement here would take the company from great to fantastic.

Advice to Management

Having worked previously at a company that offered a highly effective management coaching program, I would love to see the executive team implement something similar here for its manager-level... employees. This sort of training inspires high performers to become superstars, and can have an extremely positive impact on the team's ability to communicate more effectively and hold each other more accountable.
