I worked at TAMKO full-time for more than 10 years
Seventeen Percent of TAMKO employees are military veterans, or active reserve duty. Since the 1990s, the culture has promoted G. Edward Demings, Total Quality Management. For instance, the Red Bead... Experiment, which demonstrates there is nothing gained by rewarding or punishing staff for Common Causes of Variation. Or the Funnel Rule, showing that goals must be data-driven, and that we should not arbitrarily tamper or readjust processes, but instead, continue to aim at the target. Data will tell us whether a process is getting out of control, and drive changes. Staff learn to be open and forthcoming with information, to advance the team, department and company. The Basic Rule of Honesty is promoted from top management downward, and throughout staff, to engage honestly, in all situations, both publicly and privately. When people do a good job, staff spontaneously sends them an encouraging communication, both to show gratitude and to re-encourage the behavior. Most employees have worked at other companies, so their character is drawn to TAMKO, since they appreciate the conservative structure of the company culture. Most employees have familial ties to their geographic area, and would rather have less money, than lose personal relationships by moving to another town or city, just to get higher wages or more benefits. It has been common for staff to remain for 20-40 years. Some move from position to position, while others become irreplaceable in their position. People are hired for Character traits, foremost, with Technical Skills almost secondary. Technical skills can be improved but character traits seem firmly set guiding conduct, in past, present and likely, the future.
I miss everyone .. managers and co-workers. I loved serving TAMKO.
Advice to Management
Total Quality Management & Six Sigma seem to have been great choices. There are so many positive actions that you take, to safeguard employees, that former staff do not realize occurred, until... they have gone.
