I worked at The Hershey Company full-time for more than 10 years
Even though The Hershey Company is a publicly-traded company, you always felt part of something bigger. Since the Hershey Trust Company is its largest shareholder. As long as The Hershey Co. is doing... well, the Trust won't divest and it won't be bought up by someone larger. The Trust is responsible for ensuring that The Milton Hershey School (MHS) continues in perpetuity, so if another investment becomes more attractive, the Trust has the responsibility to keep everything going and could sell to the highest bidder. Departments have the opportunity to get involved with a student home which strengthens the bonds between the school and the company.
There was some resistance to the idea of working remotely. Managers wanted to see everyone at their desks for some reason. Now with the virus things have changed, hopefully permanently.
Advice to Management
Allow people to work from home if there's no need to be face-to-face in the office. When projects are distributed to be made part of someone's yearly goals, managers should fairly make those... available to people in the department so that everyone gets a chance to have learning opportunities. It seems like special projects are often only given to those favored by managers.
