Current Employee - Information Technology Specialist

I have been working at US Department of Defense full-time for more than 5 years

Pros

Great work environment and people to work with.

Cons

The commute to work is my greatest sorrow.

Current Employee - IMS

I have been working at U.S. Department of State full-time for more than 10 years

Pros

Incredible range of responsibilities and opportunities - limited by your engagement - yes there are some routine and sometimes mundane responsibilities but if you like being a system or network... administrator, or maybe programming, or maybe cyber-security is your thing, then being an IMS will give you the opportunity. - amazing lifestyle. Live in the best accommodation in cities around the world rent free and experience the best a country has to offer. I've literally sat at the top table wearing black tie alongside a President. - your choice -have an adventure or chill - it's up to you. - you get out what you put in.

Cons

- first two (2 year) assignments are directed - but after that the world is your oyster. - you are responsible for all IT at an embassy - so there's plenty of work and not all of it fun. - it's the... government so we have rules including your behavior outside of work - it's not the military so it's up to you to take or create opportunities and you are responsible for your logistics.

Advice to Management

We have some of the best retention rates anywhere but we do lose a few people early in their careers as the lifestyle wasn't what they expected. We could do better by recruiting people with the... right background rather than focusing on degrees.
