All of the staff at Oregon Department of Education were so friendly and passionate about the work that they do. In my role, I had many opportunities to meet with employees to learn about the work of... each team, and I was continually impressed with the level of care and commitment that each employee had for their area of expertise. Many people have a negative idea about government employees, but I have not seen anything but positivity in my time here. This is encouraging for me as an intern and a college student who wants to work for the state someday. My mentors invested in my personal growth and development, providing me with a safe place to stretch myself as a professional and learn more about state government. I highly recommend any student to consider interning at ODE, and any job seeker to apply. ODE is a place where your work has an impact on students in the classroom all over the state, and that in itself is a reason to apply, not to mention the work/life balance and benefit options! I cannot say enough good things about my time here, and I will miss the friends I have made!
Due to the nature of state government, sometimes innovation can take more time in order to ensure that state resources are being used to the benefit of Oregon residents. It is clear to see that... currently Oregon is making a huge push to foster a more collaborative and innovative environment. ODE has joined in these efforts, and in many ways been a driving force. Even during the year that I was here, I saw major shifts in innovation both at ODE and in other state agencies. There is always room for improvement!
Advice to Management
Continue to value innovation in every office and at every organizational level. Innovation is the key to improvement in every area: equity and inclusion, strategic planning, improving graduation... rates, etc. Continue to collaborate between offices and agencies to speed up work and produce overall better results. Additionally, continue the work that is being done to clean and tighten up ODE's web presence. Over the last year social media has become a major piece of ODE's recruitment and communication strategies, and our website has had a revamp. This is the work that will continue to make ODE an employer of choice, and I am excited to see the agency's growth in this area in the coming years.
