How are career development opportunities at American Marketing and Publishing?

Pros

I have been with AMP for 3.5 years now and it has been the best career choice I could have made for myself. AMP has given me the financial freedom that I once only dreamed about with their uncapped commission structure and career advancement opportunities. AMP focuses on providing affordable solutions for family owned businesses and it is and honor to work for a company that truly gives back to the community. Prior to AMP, I had no sales experience, and didn't quite know what i was getting myself into. Once I joined AMP, I have received constant support and encouragement. I am recognized for my success and coached through my failures. The leaders at AMP are present and accessible. Our team culture is extremely positive in the way we elevate employee enthusiasm, which leads to better overall productivity. I love being part of a company that provides such a valuable service to the community, and also truly values each and every employee. You know a company is doing something right when their employees truly enjoy going to work every day.

Why do American Marketing and Publishing employees quit?

Pros

Decent salary pay and tons of documented procedures for how to make it into the company for the long haul.

Cons

Requirement of 3 new print customers within the first 3 weeks or the fate is termination. Class of 8 in training only 5 passed and 4 fired at end of 3 weeks. Lots of conflicting information given during training class and the one day field training. One week of training in DeKalb IL was in the basement of an old building with broken bathroom doors and a trainer that teaches military style. Being yelled at and told not to ask questions is not a way to effectively get peopled to enthusiastically sustain good habits.

Advice to Management

Be upfront during training about all the reasons why 3 new print customers are important. Spend more time during recruitment to see if a person changing careers would be a good suite for this impulsive sales job.

How do employees feel about their professional development opportunities at American Marketing and Publishing?

Pros

Lots of positives learning lessons, life lessons. This is a good way to cut your teeth if you are new to sales. If you follow the system then you will learn the basics of selling advertising that can transfer well to your next step. Print product is great but declining at 4% a year studies show, online is decent but inferior to competition. AMP just does listing management and review management which is essential, but a business owner can do this on their own if they care at all. Is it worth the price point, yes since most business owners realistically wont, but the program is super basic. There are many social media sites that need to be managed, SEO, SEM, robust websites etc and AMP does not do these. Some of the leadership is amazing, some are not and are in way over their head, it 100% depends on your territory. The CRO is the backbone of the company that has been forced to take on way too much which he seems to handle, but all difficult things filter to him. Without him this company would be in deep deep trouble. Good system to learn and enforce good habits, good week long paid training, and if you ask for help you will usually get it depending on your territory/leadership. Lastly, if you last you will learn a lot about the world and what makes these small communities run.

Cons

Products-Again good products, but as additional products layer on in the areas they serve business owners just get confused, overwhelmed, and feel nagged if not approached correctly. Turnover is so high at AMP because the work requires independent people, that have the ability to create interest within seconds, be candid, coachable, with street smarts that 45k a year is not realistic to pay the required talent this position demands. 1 in 8 new hires make it 90 days. The number of 100k earners has declined significantly over the years as the company struggles to transition from declining print to digital. The couple remaining 100k earners are print heavy veterans that are bitter and difficult to work with. Ask in your interview is there more or less 100k earners 5 years ago to now. 10 years ago compared to now. CEO will use non competes to the fullest extent I have heard from many people, so be careful and read thoroughly what you sign. The CEO should realize if you take care of people better you wont have to hold them hostage. Pay people more, the job market is currently great and the work is just too hard to pay people what they are paid. Not including killing your car and with the 2018 tax changes the write offs declined for AMP reps cutting their earnings even more. I hope the company adjusts pay to take inflation, taxes, expensive health insurance, into account. This company has a conundrum, now 5 or so good helpful products with a new CRM tool, but the work requires higher skilled people and you wont get that unless you pay more. To skillfully dig into a town with different products requires a rare person with great leadership. a 45k-70k person just doesn't have this ability in most cases. If they have this skill then they should work somewhere else and get paid twice as much.

Advice to Management

Pay people more. The CEO is printing money like crazy and that's fine, but at the detriment of people because turnover is so high. 25/30k base has been the same for over a decade. Even if the base remains the same incentivize more through bonus/commissions. This is a hard job, and great for 1 in 8 people, but pay them more because they are more special than you know. Less greed!!

Good system to learn and enforce good habits, good week long paid training, and if you ask for help you will usually get it depending on your territory/leadership. Lastly, if you last you will learn a lot about the world and what makes these small communities run.

What is the feeling of job security at American Marketing and Publishing?

Pros

I am currently an employee for our Digital Inside Sales team in our Dekalb office. I have been with the company for three years now, and find many more to come. There are so many tools and resources that I have taken advantage of to help me become successful within AMP. Most of my coworkers have become close friends, I am continuously meeting new coworkers that share the same love for the company as I do, and there is always room for growth. AMP is a company that is always looking forward and learning from the past. We have developed a wonderful Digital Inside Sales team that is dedicated to helping AMP reach its goals, all while helping each rep specifically hitting their goals. Opportunity is really a key word for our Digital Inside Sales team. By utilizing your tools, peers, and managers we will continue to strive to build an exceptional team and to help better our small businesses that we work with. The item that drove me to AMP was the love for small businesses in the mission statement. As a company we sell to help.
