What are perks and other benefits like at Bechtel Plant Machinery?

Pros

As long as the US Nuclear Navy exists, so will BPMI. The hardest parts of the job usually involve the project management side of things, so regardless of technical background, a forward-thinking and responsible employee will do well here. The company offers outstanding benefits and fair pay (including annual cost of living raises, assuming personal performance was not awful that year). Depending on your line of work, you can see the world. Finally, the 9/80 alternate work schedule has been a blessing.

Cons

Due to the nature of the relationship between BPMI and its one and only Customer, schedules, cost, and personal egos can sometimes take precedence over doing something fully and completely right. Security, while a good goal, also tends to trump functionality when it comes to designing systems that arguably could stand to be more relaxed. When a section is lead by a manager who both listens to advice and takes decisive action, the section will prosper, but many section managers do not display these traits and often do not provide their engineers with a firm set of objectives.

Advice to Management

Feel more comfortable when standing up to a Customer when egos get in the way of recommending and implementing the correct technical solution. Support your employees and avoid surprising them in order to look good in front of the Customer.

Does Bechtel Plant Machinery offer unlimited time off?

Pros

A lot of time off, and good job stability.

Cons

Most of the people working here have no idea what they're doing. This isn't their fault because new employees are thrown to the wolves with little to no opportunity for properly learning how to do their jobs. The handful of people that do now what they're doing have been at the company for 20+ years and are typically rude and miserable. They have little patience to help an employee that they expect to leave the company in 3 years and will often give you an attitude or act annoyed when you ask for help. This then leads you to try to do everything on your own which ends up with constant errors in your work and constant looking like an idiot. Which then leads to new employees leaving after 3 years. The cycle then continues. Because this is government work, your actual work quality means little to nothing. What matters is the way your work is presented. If you know how to make a pile of garbage smell like flowers and make everyone around that pile of trash buy into it smelling like flowers you'll shoot to the top of Bpmi in no time. Because again, nobody at this company has any clue what they're doing.

Advice to Management

Take better care of your new employees and create an environment where they're able to succeed and you won't have people leaving after 3 years. Reward the pleasant people who are willing to help young engineers better. Bpmi sorely needs more people like that.

A lot of time off, and good job stability.
