Pros

Excellent company culture. Strongly values diversity in all forms. High percentage of female store managers in my district. Lots of communication with higher-ups. Company recently increased minimum starting wage for sales associates and expanded insurance benefits to all members of management, full time and part time. Felt very cared for during the pandemic. Strong visual merchandising presentation. Solid advancement and relocation opportunities. Recently shifted focus in a big way to employee recognition and celebrating successes and improving the internal and external experience. Overall an awesome place to work.

Cons

Pay scales are still not as competitive with the market as they should be. Recent distribution issues have presented a challenge in inventory levels post-pandemic. Sometimes a little too slow hopping on product/license trends.

Advice to Management

Flexible scheduling and rotating weekends off for management makes a big difference in offsetting the pay scale shortcomings of the company. Stay positive and solutions-focused, build a happy and diverse team, and don’t be afraid to share your ideas and you will go far!

Strongly values diversity in all forms.

Pros

you're selling cool items and you meet some cool queer coworkers

Cons

- I got sexually harassed by management - management denied the sexual harassment - I called the safe employee hotline to report things and it turns out the number in the back room was not even the correct number - I am being harassed by said supervisor even after quitting - the supervisor had no consequences - the only thing that changed after I filed a claim was our schedules got changed but I was still getting harassed - HR blocked my number because I was calling too much - the pay is very low $13.25 as an associate and $15.50 as an ASSISSTANT MANAGER - poor communication - gossip, lots of gossip - they dont care about your availability agreement - they have you sign a form when you start working say they can fire you whenever for no reason - i was part time and some weeks I would work 28 hours and others I would work 5

Advice to Management

fire like half your managers

management denied the sexual harassment

Pros

- talk pop culture with customers & have genuinely fun interactions - so many new items that keep it interesting - employee discount - most of the company culture & giving back via donations - lgbtq+ inclusive ads & marketing

Cons

- because of their association with HotTopic, you have to look the opposite. My nail colors were restricted to only natural colors, natural hair only, warned when I looked too “goth”. - if you don’t have a good DM, it’s not a good place to be a manager. Very hard to find someone above your DM to take your issues seriously if you’re mistreated. - compensation for nearly all positions - required to push free loyalty program to everyone

Advice to Management

Take a look at your DM and above levels, the favoritism that allows things like gaslighting to go on really needs work. And stop worrying so much about not being hot topic in employee aesthetic and worry more about how many products overlap between the two stores.

Pros

Honestly just the discount you get working there

Cons

- Racist management - Unsafe environment - Managers fail to take accountability for mistakes or help

Advice to Management

Work on taking accountability for your mistakes and stop speaking poorly about your workers right in front of them. You fail to check your staff when training new hires and make them uncomfortable when you belittle them and made sarcastic comments in front of them. Not inclusive at all. The whole “were like a family” is such a major red flag.

Events
BoxLunch made its official debut at Anime Expo earlier this month with an elevated assortment of anime merchandise. Fans descended upon the booth each day to shop our exclusive merchandise. We also premiered two of our newest collaborations: Hello Kitty x Fruits Basket (full assortment launching this August) and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Naruto (entire capsule launching spring ’23). Attendees were the first to purchase exclusive teaser tees from these exciting new collections. Anime Expo was a blast and we can’t wait until next year!
