Is City and County of San Francisco a good company to work for?

Pros

Everyone is union. Salaries are above average, even for San Francisco. You have rights and self-respect. Benefits are above average. There's plenty of opportunity for advancement if you network and are willing to move laterally. I've worked in the F500 private sector and the federal government and this is, overall, the best place I've worked. I'm proud of the values of the city and how I get to live them in my work.

Cons

In technology areas, turnover is high because of the opportunities outside the city. Management ranges from terrible to great, but I've had 4 supervisors in 3 years and 3 of them were "great." If you don't like your boss, wait 9 months. The usual bureaucracy of any large organization. Everything is political. For real. If you align with the wrong people and the winds shift, it can make things unpleasant. It's difficult to fire you unless you actually do something wrong, but it's easy to make life miserable enough that you want to quit if you make the wrong enemies.
