Does Enviva offer unlimited time off?

Pros

Autonomous work environment and not micromanaged. Great benefits. Free lunch often.

Cons

Disorganized, lack of communication with new policies and procedures, poor training for new hires, and disrespectful management. I originally thought the poor reviews were just angry employees, but they are true. The company is all over the place. Management is very unprofessional. A previous review mentioned management cursing at employees. This is a true statement, as it has been witnessed. Everything is in excel and the ERP system is not as user friendly as most. Controls and policies are not put in place, so tasks are not consistent. If they are put in place, they are not communicated to the team as needed. There is no work life balance. You are expected to work long hours and are made to feel guilty if you leave at a reasonable time.

Advice to Management

Better training, more professionalism, and better communication.

What is paid time off like at Enviva?

Pros

I'm writing this because after reading the reviews I do not feel that people are getting an accurate balanced overview of what it's like to work at Enviva. Great mission. Leadership that truly wants to make a difference. Nice culture - strong team atmosphere. Really enjoy my colleagues. Leadership and peers that push to make me better. Freedom to try new tactics without fear of failure. Constantly growing. Longterm growth of the company is incredible. Fun domestic and international projects. I actually enjoy coming to work each and every day. Culture that makes me want to give it my best -- pushes me to try harder and execute. My colleagues are nearly all high achievers and it's nice to be in an environment where everyone is really good at what they do. Fast paced environment. Good opportunities for training and advancement. Empathetic colleagues. Great PTO policy. Snacks and free lunch Fridays. Nice location in central Bethesda close to shops and metro and beltway (no DC traffic!). From what I can tell pretty good benefits across the board. A management team that is approachable.

Cons

Like all growing companies there are hiccups along the way. With growth comes growing pains. Could improve "back office" functions and processes. We have lots of great people but to often it takes an endless email chain for someone to make a decision. Getting approvals at times can be cumbersome. Coordination and communication between teams is often lacking but this is not unusual in a large rapidly growing company. Often we are moving so fast we forget to recognize success and achievements.

Advice to Management

To properly scale I think the we need to scale our internal technology platforms and processes. Perfect can not be the death of success. Often too many cooks in the kitchen. We have a lot of great leaders/middle management and those in these roles need to make a decision on something instead of asking 5 more people what they think. Input from others and alignment is very important but not if it slows down progress and creates last minute scrambling. Lastly, people have incredible successes everyday in their individual roles/ teams - lets celebrate that more.

Great PTO policy.

How are senior leaders perceived at Enviva?

Pros

Enviva is a growing company, and they seem to have little market competition for the space they're in. As long as political headwinds don't change, or significant technological advancements don't disrupt their market, they've set themselves up for the next 15-20 years or more. Plenty of free food and snacks. Company provided vehicle for high travel employees.

Cons

Whatever the Pros are, they are significantly outweighed by the Cons. The most serious downside is upper management, especially that over Operations. They have high turnover for a reason. The several mentions of long working hours and poor work / life balance are here for a reason. There are plenty of other, much larger, 24/7 industrial companies that don't struggle like this. Yes, they pay pretty well. Other companies pay just as well and better. Why does upper management perform poorly? They overwhelmingly come from industries dissimilar to Enviva's core business, and their logic and decision making strategies don't align with what the company actually does. The plant's are not assembly lines, but management wants them run that way. Everyone is learning on the fly what it means to run a processing company, but instead of acknowledging their failures and changing course, it's as though they dig their heels in deeper. Despite several fancy business degrees running around the company, they've not yet been able to correct what all these reviews over several years have repeatedly said. I don't think management is stupid. I think they're arrogant. I saw many dedicated, hard working individuals get openly and publicly maligned and defamed by management. There are still several good people working here, and I firmly believe that if the CEO and the board did a major shakeup with upper management, Enviva would see tremendous growth.

Advice to Management

Have the humility to look at other industries and learn from how they do business and how they run their plants. It's not too late. Truly treat your employees with respect. Have all the high expectations that you want, but just respect your people. Enviva could easily be doing twice as good as they are now. The potential is there, but you haven't executed it yet, and many good employees have suffered much at your hands.
