What is working from home like at Hawthorne Gardening Company?

Pros

Good benefits, work from home

Cons

Extremely aloof management, business runs on narrow-minded financial incentives, Directors and up have no real grasp of the changes that need to happen. Compensation is low for people that aren't directors or higher. Terrible, abusive culture that is "me first, money second".

Advice to Management

Having more meetings about the ongoing problems won't solve the ongoing problems. Listen to the experts you've hired.

How flexible is your schedule working at Hawthorne Gardening Company?

Pros

Flexible hours, sometimes free food, you can't get fired unless you REALLY mess up, it almost feels like the company cares but not really, hiring internally is easy should you decide to change positions, and the people are nice occasionally.

Cons

Management is an F in responsiveness and duties (I am currently waiting on a few things I asked for months ago). The pay is NOT competitive because you are graded as a whole when raise time comes along. This means if someone is doing the bare minimum and you are taking a lot of responsibility or working very hard you will get the same raise as the person barely doing their job. Last year the raise was 2.5%. Corporate and investors are the bread and butter while you are considered nothing. There will be lots of "thank yous" and appreciation for your hard work but little to no compensation (you may be given a bonus that will ultimately be added to your paycheck/401k and taxed heavily). The company will pretend to care about you and try to make things seem like they are changing but so far the previous company, Sunlight Supply, was by far a much better company to work for. If you don't mind sub par management, little to no opportunity for a better wage, being treated like you're a rock star but feeling no weight behind the words, slow action on your behalf while adding more responsibility to your daily tasks, and having your work judged as a group instead of individually then you should apply here. If not I would find another place that values your work more than 2.5% and maybe even pays you more from the start.

Advice to Management

Understand where people are coming from when they get mad at you, be more responsive, and hire more people to help you with tasks allowing more focus on the workers.

Our Vermicrop team recently held their 3rd annual VermiFest: Our festival for the community! The event is totally free, and attendees get a taste of the Vermi culture. We also show them crazy amounts of Vermi love. We recently held our third VermiFest celebration, and over 350 people from the community attended. It was amazing! This year, we had music, food trucks, candy, bounce houses, balloon animals, and games including limbo, giant Connect Four, corn hole and many other carnival games. We also had a Halloween costume contest, pumpkin decorating, free photos, and great raffle prizes. VermiFest means a lot to our associates and is a highlight of our team’s year. Throughout the event, our volunteers are making sure that our guests are having a great time. And after the event is over, we’re already anxious for the next one. Everyone feels more connected with the community because of VermiFest. Thank you to Vermicrop Director of Operations John Perrino and our Vermicrop associates who make this event possible!
