What is paid time off like at Illumina?

Pros

So many perks, the pay is great as well as the free time off. The people really make the place great!

Cons

Some groups are overworked. Department fit is very important.

Advice to Management

Better management planning and vision sharing in the lower levels could reduce rework and need to overwork.

Does Illumina offer relocation assistance?

Poor work life balance Insufficient staff levels for growth Chaotic growth - many last minute changes/requests/ insufficient planning No time for anything except work - I.e for training, networking, social activities High levels of stress - multiple competing priorities, poor training in new systems, poor communication and planning resulting in last minute fire fighting. Change saturation - IT systems, structures, processes, new sites, new projects

Advice to Management

Understand bigger picture of employee experience when planning systems changes - so they don’t all happen at once. Resource teams for future requirements rather than in response to change that has already happened. Reward planning over fire fighting Improve project and change management capability across all teams Simplify everything to allow people to focus on priorities. Discourage presenteeism. Encourage local innovation.

Does Illumina offer dental insurance?

Pros

Coworkers were cool people. Benefits (not salary, but insurance benefits) are pretty good. They try to maintain a diverse workplace.

Cons

To start, they underpay their engineers when compared to similar jobs in industry. Management will make you work 60 hour weeks, then tell you “if you’re working 60 hours you’re doing something wrong”. They’ll give you an exorbitant workload, tell you what to prioritise, and then full on yell at you in front of team members if you don’t finish what they told you not to prioritise. When I told my old boss I had covid, she told me “don’t get a covid test and don’t report anything if you have gotten a covid test because I don’t want you to be out of work for 2 weeks”. They give raises based on your initial salary negotiations, regardless of the quality of work you complete. To add to that last statement, after my first raise I was making less money than people who started after me, with less experience, BEFORE they got their raise. Management will take 20-30 days off per year, and work from home more than 60% of the time; meanwhile, they tell you that you’re expected to be onsite 100% of the time and force you to log your time off if you work remote for even half a day. Don’t think about taking more than 5 days off in a year. Finally, don’t even THINK about telling your boss you are overwhelmed. I had a meeting with my old boss where I very calmly and professionally told her that I was overwhelmed from working 11-12 hours per day, every single day, and that our team needed more help. She then went to HR and told them that I cussed her out in front of my teammates, resulting in my termination. It was a blatant lie that very easily could have been disproven, but HR chose to blindly side with my manager. The reason for this is simple; it costs less money to fire an engineer and rehire one than it does a manager. This was my experience in MTO (manufacturing technical operations). I won’t state my specific team, but this was a manager who had multiple documented complaints and pending investigations (plural) through HR. Do yourself a favor, and do not work for this company.

Benefits (not salary, but insurance benefits) are pretty good.

Does Illumina offer family leave?

Pros

The best ride I have ever had in terms of learning, opportunity, fast pace, not limited by the role(boundaries) and working globally. Sky is the limit if you are willing to put in energy and work with integrity. The management team allows you to take calculated risks and they even gave me the opportunity to work across the globe. The compelling mission of unlocking the power of genome is very powerful, it kept me going and others as well. The CEO is the biggest change agent to unleash the power and importance of genomics. There is nothing I would change in terms of my time at Illumina. I decided to leave because I needed a change in organisation, meet new people and have a new perspective.

Cons

This (more to share below) is the only con which happened to me where I felt the organisation did not execute with good faith(in my opinion they may be blindsided). During my exit from the company, they left me wondering if I had worked for the same company for almost 10 years after making so many (personal and professional) sacrifices . I was treated as an employee who had not made any impact. After serving the organisation for almost 10 years working 10-12 hours a day, including missing out on paternity leave to help program go live on time recently. They decided to clawback prorated $$(including tax they paid behalf of me) for the relocation because I left within 1 year of relocation back to San Diego. Additionally, they did not pay full relocation, it was partially funded by me in addition to taxation impact. The company spends $$ for consultants to travel but decided to clawback on their own employees. I wish there was more empathy, consideration and not just follow policy/contracts as written especially at a time when inflation is all time high and when the employees have made huge impact.

Advice to Management

1. General - In terms of execution and strategy, over time due to macro challenges/situation across the world we have given less importance to people and more for delivery. I recommend refocus on people and delivery equally. You would earn loyalty with employees and reduce burn out. 2. Review HR policies for exiting and returning employees, you will see former employees boomerang back and restore some of the balance of new and existing employees.

Does Illumina have a pension plan?

Isolation, unrealistic timescales, no training

Advice to Management

People are nice, but have no way to talk to each other; developers are isolated, with rest of team in USA. Do-not-disturb atmosphere is intimidating: someone in a tiny team has no way to seek help. Timescales are arbitrary, guessed by management, unrealistic and inflexible. When deadlines approach, software quality gets ignored. Staff reporting is relentless, and probation is weaponized. Don't employ developers in total isolation in UK. Don't employ people without bioinformatics, explicitly deny them time to learn it, then condemn them for not knowing it. Organise "how-to" pages on Confluence so that beginners can actually find what they need.

This month, we’re celebrating acclaimed Stanford neuroscientist Ben Barres (1954-2017). Ben wanted to figure out the causes of the brain tissue degeneration seen in diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s diseases. His research focused on the nine of every 10 cells in the human brain that aren’t nerve cells, or neurons. They’re called glial cells or, collectively, glia.
