How are career development opportunities at Jenner & Block?

Pros

Seemingly stable financially, yet staffing cuts. LGBTQ friendly. Pro Bono work highly valued. Proper pronoun & gender identity leader. Committed to Downtown Chicago.

Cons

Limited to no forward career growth for Accounting and IT staff especially in the lower ranks. Strongly advise young hires to plan future moves outside of the org after 2 years. History of malevolent, indecisive, hierarchical management of the back office past and present. Small team and independent action to accomplish projects not valued in favor of large ineffective teams. Projects restarted multiple times or abandoned. During pandemic several rounds of terms/lay offs in Accounting. Staff that remains is exiting. Outsiders brought in to join management ranks when talented and enthusiastic staff exist. During firm zoom meetings exclamations from lead partners of doing well and not having to let anyone go . . assume they were not aware or indifferent to non attorney staffing changes. The reputation they strive for is damaged, though they may not be aware. Women and POC with 15 to 20 years of service were let go only to have identical positions with new titles refilled in weeks. Pro Bono cause if there ever was one . .

Advice to Management

Stop relying on COO's to run the day to day and have Managing Partners . . manage. Are the C suites telling you what you want to hear? Over the years have key people simply exited out of frustration? Has HR made mistakes and blamed others? Why acknowledge years of service when you staff is fungible?

Limited to no forward career growth for Accounting and IT staff especially in the lower ranks.
