What is working from home like at Klarna?
Pros
Work side by side with amazing talent Culturally diverse Modern dev tooling Full-stack independent teams
Cons
The office is just crammed with desks. If you're lucky you might get your own. An increasingly number of teams now work in shared workstations, where you'll be all day pairing or mob programming with your team all day, every day, at all times. Of course that's great for productivity, risking your coworkers' disapproval, how can you get distracted? For the same reason the office is very noisy. Open workspace + mob programming = NOISE (with the S) You can't work from home. Company policy. When asked about these topics, a top level manager said working from home was not good for teamwork, and that they're doing something about the lack of space: replacing desks with workstations and putting curtains between teams for avoiding noise. Fragile to criticism. You're expected to show a positive attitude at all times. Remember, good employees don't complain. Software factory mindset. You're told to work hard, the more time you spend at the office the better. It shows commitment. Not a place for creative people. According to studies, your brain needs to alternate between focus and diffuse mode many times a day to facilitate creativity. You won't be able to do that here, you need to be focused at all times when you're pairing the entire day. Don't get me wrong, I think pair programming is a great tool, I've had a great time using it in the past, but I also believe you can only do it too much, and it can be easily abused by managers whose only concern is numbers. No working at your own pace. No slow thinkers. Mandatory pseudo-scientific logic tests. High churn rate. High dissatisfaction levels measured by the company itself. No empowering the individual with trust and freedom. No disruption in work environment whatsoever. It's a bank, after all.
Advice to Management
