What are co-workers like at L'Arche?

Great support from management and colleagues. Very good induction training program and additional training offered.

Low salary as everywhere in the care sector.

Some relieves are not working that much but get the same salary (even higher) than full time workers

Past Community Leader at location and past House Manager little more than bitter, angry bullies. Prattle on about "faith" yet are nasty more often than not. Revelations about Vanier very sad and tragic but in a way not unsurprising; for example, if a colleague expresses romantic interest in a co-worker, it is assumed the co-worker should fall over themselves with gratitude and happiness at the attention, and if the colleague is ignored (perhaps you have no interest in a romantic relationship) then passive aggressive destruction of your character will begin - cowardly actions to be fair. Overall, not that much of a stretch from that mentality to the heinous actions of Jean Vanier - "God has placed us both here etc." Very disturbing to contemplate!

Advice to Management

Drop the endless mind games and focus on the care side.

Residents are so nice and kind they are welcoming people

Managements are not good. Always short staff

Pros

Fun workplace, most people are easy to get along with. This workplace really values empathic people!

Cons

Work-life balance can be tough because you work and live in the same place, so, if you like seeing everybody when you're off work, that's great!
