Pros

Lots of resources and opportunities to explore whatever subject might interest you Leadership is very willing to help you on a one-on-one basis if you ask for it You get to work with some truly impressive individuals Very good job security and stability

Cons

Company structure can be very opaque to newcomers, making it unclear who is in charge of what On-boarding process was nonexistent Somewhat low amount of diversity It's hard to get recognition unless you actively advocate for yourself Higher education is absolutely necessary to advance

Pros

The lab has a great deal of stability compared to the private sector. There's great diversity in different Divisions, but the top employees, the Ph.D. researchers, get to work at one of pre-eminent research organizations in the country on cutting edge research. Other levels of employees enjoy stability in part due to the security requirements which limit employment to US citizens and make churning of employees undesirable. It has great prestige. I can't rate below the compensation or benefits for the wide range of job categories, but since the benefits are similar or identical to those MIT (technically regular lab employees work for MIT) I would think the benefits would be generous compared to many private sector employers
