Does Southeastern Grocers offer disability insurance?

Pros

The pay is industry standard.

Cons

Benefits are poor - premiums are 2 times what they were in my previous position and you have to PAY for short and long term disability. There is NO work/life balance in IT. Just long hours and no comp time. Company just went through a Chapter 11, closed a bunch of stores and laid off IT staff. NO job security, no attempt at retaining IT staff.

Advice to Management

Make IT employee retention a priority.

What is paid time off like at Southeastern Grocers?

Pros

There really aren’t any Pros anymore

Cons

No hours for associates, customer service is not a priority, Managememt Chase’s paper and reports instead of focusing on customers and processes. Micro management by District Managers causes poor morale. Text messages while on days off and vacation were detrimental. Bonus program is pretty much impossible to hit. The more hours cut the more customers lost, it’s a cycle that will kill Southeastern Grocers.

Advice to Management

Live by your ways of being, it’s not only Store Managers down. District management does not care passionately and do not put people first.

Text messages while on days off and vacation were detrimental.

What kind of career opportunities exist at Southeastern Grocers?

Pros

opportunity to use my voice to make a difference. They don't use you as an extra set of hands, they want you to come in and improve what they have.

Cons

layoffs, restructurings, shrinking business, small benefits

Advice to Management

Don't move from outside of Jacksonville to come do this. CEO showed up to our final presentations (which were a nightmare) in shorts like he was on vacation, then seemed super bored. Of the 15 of us, 1 of us was offered a part-time job (job offer right in the middle of our 4-hour presentations so many were demotivated and became anxious, one girl started crying during her presentation). Everyone else had to apply... they knew our skills, why not coordinate us with a position, why make us go through a process like outsiders?

How are promotions handled at Southeastern Grocers?

Pros

Working with my specific department team is great, we understand each other well and there are many ways which we support each other daily. From what I understand, this type of team-comraderie is throughout the company. There is a willingness on the part of next-level managers to listen to input from lower employees. Feedback, input, listening, and overall communication is good on the team level.

Cons

The company as a whole does not seem overly interested in investing in their employees and instead puts up appearances of caring. Poor starting benefits, no transparency on pay for different positions, very limited ways for employees to provide feedback. Executive level team does not understand the positions of those that they are supposed to be leading. No internal promotions, people have to jump from department to department in order to grow their careers. Upper level managers especially do not seem to be promoted from within. That in itself creates more miscommunication as people brought in from outside cannot understand why issues happen and don't set realistic expecations.

Advice to Management

Focus less on events as a form of employee appreciation. Employees want to be appreciated through salary, time off, and flexible work schedules. Managers should be sure they understand why issues happen before making recommendations for solutions. Improve bottom-up communication so that everyone in different departments feel like their voice actually matters, not just that you say it matters.
