How is the work/life balance at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital?

Pros

The mission of St. Jude makes it an inspiring place to work. The benefits are great, there is a good work life balance, and plenty of opportunities to socialize after hours if you are new to the city and want to make friends. Opportunities for career development, and to hear guest speakers, are frequent and generally encouraged. There is nice multicultural balance, and I'm glad I took the job.

Cons

Memphis takes some getting used to.

Advice to Management

Keep listening to your employees, that's one of the reasons you've been rated a great place to work so many years in a row. Thank you for valuing our input.

What is overtime like at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital?

Pros

Great facilities, resources, and career development opportunities for postdocs. There is a strong sense of culture and community. Leadership is very transparent with things going on in the hospital and they try very hard to promote work-life balance and the overall well-being of employees.

Cons

I am sure this problem is not specific to St Jude, but rather all graduate/postdoc trainings in academia in general. You are expected to work long tedious hours without any overtime pay, often sacrificing personal and family time. If you are not in the lab until 9 pm or on weekends, it's almost implied that you are not working hard enough. Again, this is not a problem with St Jude, but it's a general problem in academia that I don't think will change anytime soon. I do have to say that St Jude is trying very hard to push for work-life balance, but it really depends on which PI you work for and how understanding they are.

Advice to Management

Keep up the great work!

How flexible is your schedule working at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital?

Pros

Aside from the obvious benefit of working for a place with a mission as amazing as St. Jude, there are tangible value-adds of working here that make it very evident that St. Jude values their workforce. Our health benefits are *amazing* and SO affordable, we have great time off packages for sick and vacation, we get tuition reimbursement, 7% put into our 403B, money added to our FSA for childcare, adoption assistance, an amazing on-site gym, a *farmer's market* all summer -- there's even an on-site car washing service.

Cons

The scheduling flexibility and work-from-home options are still a bit old fashioned, but I think the goal is to keep folks as connected to the mission as possible, and that means being on campus.
