What is health insurance like at Texas Health and Human Services Commission?

Pros

The benefits are great, free health insurance and retirement match, all state holidays off, weekends off. Overtime is paid, the local office is like a family. We stay connected to the region through a virtual daily team huddle. We are always on task so the day goes very fast. Hour lunch and two breaks. Helping the clients is very rewarding and it feels good. I enjoy getting up and going to work each day! It’s a very professional environment, I have my own office and can work peacefully. Almost weekly there are emails sent from our Region Director with all the opportunities that are open to move up. Tons of encouragement from everyone to find what your niche is within the agency and grow. Tuition reimbursement and free mental health resources also. I am so happy!

Cons

The training is pretty brutal in the sense that there is SO much policy to learn and the systems seem complex at first. The trainers are all true blue vets though and help so much. The trainers do their very best to tailor the learning experience to your style of learning. I am 7 months in to the career now and I am still learning every day. They say it takes about 2 years until you will feel like you REALLY have it down. So you just have to learn to relax and let yourself learn basically. If you make it through the 3 months of training you have what it takes in my opinion. It’s like boot camp but with sweet, comedic, happy teachers instead of angry yelling drill sergeants.

Advice to Management

I guess I’m a dork but I would really like to see every worker and supervisor be able to say what our mission is at HHSC from memory. I wish our Directors or leaders in the daily huddle would call on someone randomly each day. I believe the mission of any organization should be written in the hearts of the employees. Also, Region 7 rocks!

What are perks and other benefits like at Texas Health and Human Services Commission?

Pros

Typical state benefits.. free insurance, pto, sick leave, retirement

Cons

Lack of support. You process cases without even knowing how to do them. The state is always so behind that they don't care if you don't know how. They just want completions. this creates so much stress on new workers because you get to decide whether or not someone receives benefits even though you aren't sure if you're processing correctly.

Advice to Management

Provide support and proper training. Find a way to give incentives. Stop making calendar events for offices to participate in on their own dime. That doesn't boost moral, it empties our pocketbooks.
