Does US Coast Guard have a pension plan?

Pros

- Job security - Potentially great locations to work - Most people you work with are really great - Benefits are good, especially if you do 20 and get a pension - Shore-based jobs typically have good work-life balance (not so much the case if you're on a ship...)

Cons

This list includes items I found consistent across my units (which I overall found to be "good" units): - The entire Coast Guard's budget is the cost of 1 Naval Aircraft Carrier. Poor funding is pretty evident. Leadership allocates funding to the "flashier" missions, which hurts other, arguably more beneficial components - Allergic to innovation. CGHQ will say otherwise, but there is a clear mindset of wanting to continue using aging technology (my last supervisor didn't even want to set up a shared email inbox for our branch when I offered to do it). - Very hard to affect change until you have climbed the ranks (even then, there is still plenty of red tape). - Plenty of career fields, but they want you to establish yourself in one rather quickly and you can't really swap out after that, so make sure you truly enjoy what that field is before locking in to it. - Personnel shortages lead to junior officers being pushed faster into managerial roles and not becoming true leaders with sufficient technical knowledge in their mission specialty.
