What is the feeling of job security at University of Alabama at Birmingham?

Pros

Slow paced, friendly people and flexibility. The job is stable, it depends on whether you want a job or career.

Cons

Career ladder or development is non-existent. Your job title could be exactly the same after 5 years with UAB, although I have seen some who were on the same position for 7-10 years, this is especially true for non-faculty. Normally you would get a slightly better offer to attract you to come to Alabama, once you are here, it is likely to stay that way without growth for a long time. The biostatistics and epidemiology personnel/faculty are mostly graduate from UAB. But I thought in the research field, it is better for graduates to go somewhere after study completion to have more exposure. The salary range listed on the job posting appears to be for show, you would get the mid-point if you were lucky. It takes 10 years to get vested for the retirement, I realize for some other places it is 5 years. Staying with an employer without career ladder for 10 years just to get the pension could potentially hurt your career as there is no seniority. There is a formula to calculate the pension. Check that before considering coming to UAB if pension is important.

The job is stable, it depends on whether you want a job or career.
